Tip #1
Water the lawn in the early morning before the sun is intense to reduce
water loss from evaporation. Don’t water on windy days and skip
watering on rainy days.
Tip #2
Install rain gutters and collect water from downspouts to reduce water
use.
Tip #3
Choose indigenous plants because they will likely need less supplemental
moisture.
Tip #4
Trickle irrigation and drip irrigation systems help reduce water use
and meet the needs of plants because the water is applied directly
to the soil.
Tip #5
Install an irrigation system. There are products that are readily available
for home use and easy to install.
Tip #6
Fix leaky faucets and plumbing joints; and, install water-saving showerheads
or flow restrictors.
Tip #7
Don’t run the water when brushing your teeth, washing your car,
doing the dishes, shaving, cleaning vegetables, etc.
Tip #8
Take short showers and don’t use the toilet as an ashtray or trash
receptacle.
Tip #9
Don’t waste cold water while waiting for hot water to come out.
Capture it in a can to use later on houseplants or the garden.
Tip #10
To clean the sidewalk, driveway or gutter – use a broom, not the
hose.
Tip #11
Wash dishes by hand; but, if using the dishwasher, make sure it is fully
loaded with dishes.
Tip #12
Compost yard trimmings instead of throwing it out. Mulch and compost
reduces outdoor watering by 30 to 60 percent.
Tip #13
Collect and use rainwater.
